A young orphan boy Jim Button, his best friend Luke and a magical steam engine called Emma travel across the world in search of the truth about where Jim came from. Four former classmates, Philipp, Leonie, Timo and Yasmin arrange reunion over the weekend in one of Philipp's properties. Philipp's wife and daughter are also present. The weekend ends in bloodbath however, with three people dead and the suspect in coma. Two years later Leonie's mother asks the former classmate of the alleged murderer, Doro Kagel, to reopen the case. She would never trust her daughter to do such an act, and even Doro starts having doubts that are only reinforced by the silence of the survivors.
The first part, "A New World", tells how the young German engineer Karl May comes to America and starts to work for a railway company in the Wild West. Under dramatic circumstances, he meets Apache chief Winnetou and becomes friends with him and his tribe. The Apaches give it the name Old Shatterhand. Together they fight now against the unscrupulous henchmen of the railway company, who wants to lay a route through the Indian area.

Pastor Stefan Book once again has his hands full in his parish in St. Pauli: he has only just managed to talk the mentally distressed sexton Eddi out of attempting suicide when he learns that 16-year-old confirmation student Paloma and her boyfriend Winni, who is the same age, are expecting a child. As Paloma is still living with her alcoholic mother, the youth welfare office would prefer to give the baby to foster parents as soon as it is born. But Pastor Book fights to ensure that the two teenagers can take responsibility for their child despite the adverse circumstances.

But the very next morning, the Brückers realize that they have underestimated their new neighbors. The immigrants from the Far East turn out to be real high-flyers. Logically, the Brückers find so much perfectionism unbearable in the long run and prepare to strike back...
